Goutree is a brand name for technology developed from research carried out by Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) using plant locally known as cucur atap. The plant has been authenticated and its scientific name is Baeckea frutescens. It is a technology to develop a quality, safety and efficacy antigout standardized herbal extract. The extract found is to inhibit the activity of the xanthine oxidase enzyme. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of xanthine to hypoxanthine and uric acid. High level of uric acid is associated with gout disease. Active and natural compound namely 6-methly quercetin is used as biomarker in the development of the standardized extract to control the quality, safety and efficacy of the technology. Two invention disclosures were filed (ID 1 & 14/2012) with regards all findings in the study. A patent (PI 2014000187) title “An extract of Baeckea frutescens and its use in the treatment of gout” was granted in January 2021.

In the market, the technology can be segment into two types of product:

  1. Consumed product- capsule/tablet/syrup
  2. Topical application product-spray/cream/balm

Goutree is developed to address the problem faced by gout patients in order to consume or to apply safe, natural and less side effects products or medications.

SEEL30 is an active ingredient in a form of standardised aqueous extract of Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) that was prepared under specific conditions in which to retain a specific group of marker and bioactive compounds coded as EL30. Since 2016, data on quality, safety and efficacy have been gathered by Dr Nurhanan and her team to cater the regulatory requirements towards the preparation of low-claim and middle- claim health-based product(s) that incorporates SEEL30.

The quality of SEEL30 is ensured by its chemical fingerprint and EL30 content. The S.O.P. of SEEL30 (FRIM ID21/2018) and its potential usages had been patent filed with MyIPO (UI 2018702577). SEEL30 was scientifically proven to have anti-ovarian cancer property when tested using cancer cell lines (in vitro) and animal model (in vivo).

SEEL30 was also found to have ergogenic property when tested on animal model and the protein target that contribute to the increased in the ATP production had been identified using proteomic analysis. At the moment, Dr Nurhanan and team have prepared prototype products in the forms of capsules and two versions of pre-mix health drinks (chocolate and coffee) that incorporate SEEL30 in these product formulations in which these products are classified respectively as a low-claim and F&B products.

The new market segments for these products may include women, millennial who embrace active and healthy lifestyle and cancer patients who had completed their chemotherapy sessions and undergoing palliative care. Based on their findings, Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) has unlimited potential in term of its medicinal properties and applications.

The team keep on doing the R&D on SEEL30 so as to build up more scientific data fordeveloping this active ingredient towards middle- and high-claim products. In the future, they hope to pursue SEEL30 for pre-clinical and clinical trials in human and would welcome for smart collaboration with food or/and health-based industries so that this active ingredient can be part of the treatments for cancer patients.

Labisia pumila or known as Kacip Fatimah from the Myrsinaceae family is a popular herb species used in Malaysia. Parts of the leaves or whole trees are traditionally used to treat internal problems and women’s health specially to stimulate childbirth, speed up the birth process and postpartum treatment. Other uses of this species are to treat bloating, bloody diarrhea, menstruation, gonorrhea and bone aches. Most of the raw material sources used for the manufacture of herbal products in the market are taken from the forest or in the wild without knowing the genetic quality of the species. This situation will directly affect the quality and quality of the products sold.

Looking at this importance, researchers from the Plant Breeding Program, Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) led by Dr. Farah Fazwa Md Ariff has conducted research over a period of 10 years for the selection of elite kacip fatimah breeds. These breeds are selected based on good growth characteristics and active chemical content. Total phenolic content or total phenolic content is the main trait as the basis for the selection of the elite Kacip Fatimah breed. This clone has already been registered for Plant Variety Protection (PVP) application under the Department of Agriculture Malaysia under the name FaFaF01.

The FaFaF01 clone also has a high amount of biomass and is easily adaptable to various environmental conditions. Therefore, it is easy to grow on plantations or in greenhouses. Several cultivation models have been developed for the cultivation of FaFaF01 clones to obtain good yield (ROI). It can be grown as a single crop, agroforestry or intercropping. FRIM also has a technology package not only in terms of plant material, but also in breeding, care and cultivation methods that can help the industry for its cultivation. Industries involved in the plantation and production of kacip fatimah-based products can plant FaFaF01 clones to obtain high quality end products.
